Before your plate is made
DOCUMENTS REQUIRED.
For a UK number plate, you need original documents that prove your name and address and show you are entitled to use the registration number.
What to prepare: proof of your name and address, plus one entitlement document from the list below. A name-only document does not prove your address. Contact us to arrange the document check before your plate is made.
Name and address
Any one of these can confirm both:
- Driving licence
- Utility, Council Tax or rates bill from the last 6 months
- Bank or building society statement from the last 6 months
- National identity card
Name only
These confirm your name. You will also need proof of your address:
- Passport (UK or non-UK)
- Bank or building society debit or credit card
- Police warrant card
- Armed forces identity card
Right to use the registration
Bring one of these entitlement documents:
- Vehicle registration certificate (V5C or V5CNI)
- Green “new keeper” slip from the V5C or V5CNI
- Certificate of entitlement (V750 or V750NI)
- Retention document (V778)
- Vehicle tax or SORN renewal reminder (V11 or V11NI)
- Temporary registration certificate (V379 or V379NI)
- Number plate authorisation certificate (V948) with an official DVLA stamp
- Electronic number plate authorisation certificate (eV948 or eV948/2)
- Fleet operator authorisation letter, including from a lease or hire company, quoting the V5C document reference number
- For a fleet using the V5C on demand scheme: a PDF of the vehicle details from the view vehicle record service
- UK trailer registration certificate (VTRC)
List based on GOV.UK guidance on getting number plates made. The documents are checked before production; paying online does not replace that check.
